Apollo Mission, Trains, Female CEOs, and William Durant—What They All Have in Common.
As a member of the “Big Three” in American automakers, General Motors continues to dominate the auto market with brands like Chevy, Cadillac, and Buick. Founded in 1908 in Flint Michigan, General Motors has expanded to all parts of the US, with over 100 locations and around 173,000 employees! As a car giant, GM’s vehicles and engineering are easily recognizable, but here are some GM facts that you may not know about:
- GM played a part with the Apollo moon missions. They developed a navigation system and helped with inertial guidance.
- In 1956, GM dabbled in the train industry and produced two trains with ten passenger cars. After a ten year run, the trains were retired in 1966.
- The founder of GM, William C Durant, was a carriage maker before he founded the company. His carriage company was actually the biggest in the world at the time.
- In 2014 General Motors appointed Mary Barra as the CEO of the company. This made her the first women to head a major vehicle company.
